Özet
The aim of the study is to evaluate the exercise program conducted on children with mental deficiency by children’s mothers. The study consists of 70 children with special needs who participated in the sports activity program for 2 days 1 hour per week for 6 months. In the activity program; the participants performed swimming, athletics, step-aerobics, basketball, soccer, badminton and table tennis activities. The mothers of 70 children with special needs formed the subject group of the study. In the study, Exercise Benefit/Barrier Scale was used which was developed by Sechrist, Walker, and Pender (1987), adapted into Turkish by Karahan et al.(2011). In the statistical analysis of the obtained data, exercise benefit and perceived barrier values’ arithmetic mean and standard deviations were analyzed. The t-test was carried out in comparisons of exercise benefit and perceived barrier in the beginning and ending. As a result of the research; perceived benefit arithmetic average and the standard deviation was found as (98, 50±6.23), perceived obstacle (39, 20±3, 27), and total (137, 70±9, 50). A high-level significant difference was found in perceived benefit and perceived barrier values (0,001). In conclusion, children with mental deficiency participating in sportive activities show that it is perceived as beneficial by their mothers.
