Özet
The intensification of neo-Ottomanist rhetoric in the second half of the twentieth century, particularly during the AKP (Justice and Development Party) period, has given rise to much controversy centered on the question of whether neo-Ottomnists truly aspire to new conquest or expansion. The current government, with its history of facilitating Turkish–Islamic synthesis, has begun to pursue policies with a neo-Ottomanist orientation, that is to say using the Ottoman Empire as its point of reference as opposed to the Republic of Turkey, which is based on a nation-state perspective. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (who was elected president in 2014) and his minister of foreign affairs (2009–14) Ahmet Davutoğlu drew attention to territories that were once within the borders of the Ottoman Empire, frequently referring to Turkey’s imperial past.
