| This study aims to investigate the effect of teaching activities prepared according to Government and Binding Theory, a syntax theory developed by Chomsky, on teaching the concept of voice to 8th-grade students. The teaching activities involved the use of a grammar design formed by combining the data from this theory with the principles of the Functional Grammar model. The study group included 83 students studying at the 8th-grade level in three separate schools. These students were selected based on their socio-economic levels using stratified purposeful sampling. The study applied a mixed method research design that involved the use of qualitative and quantitative research techniques. The quantitative data were collected using a one-group pre-and post-test quasi experimental design, while the qualitative data were collected through interviews conducted with the students and teachers and researcher observations. According to pre-test and post-test results, the study group of 8th-grade students benefitted from the teaching activities prepared according to the Government and Binding Theory, as indicated by the statistically significant increase in their learning levels and general achievement levels on voice from the pretest to the posttest. From the content analysis performed on the students’ and teachers’ views, which constituted the qualitative data of the study, the themes of active participation in teaching activities, suitability for the level, attractiveness, using all skills at the same time, sufficient number of activities, suggestions, fun of the activities, easiness of the activities, use of foreshadowing technique, activity-based, and satisfaction … |
