| The Water Distribution System (WDS) is a complex technological system, working continuously and requiring a high safety level. The objectives of an urban water system are to provide safe, potable water for domestic use, adequate quantity of water at sufficient pressure for fire protection and water for industrial use. Urban water distribution systems around the world are becoming older and hence more prone to failure. Therefore, an efficient failure management strategy becomes important. The structural deterioration of water mains and their failures are affected by a number of factors, including pipe material, pipe size, pipe age, soil type, climate, and pressure zone changes. The main focus of this study is the deterioration and failure of pipe assets in urban water distributon systems (WDS). Due to the different topology and hydraulic characteristics of the transmission (pipelines) and distribution (network) components of a water supply system, separate failure detection and location techniques are proposed. In this study pipe deterioration, pipe failure (is a part of the deterioration process), different failure mechanisms and causes were outlined. A brief overview of existing deterioration modeling and failure prediction techniques were also given. Direct inspection and monitoring, also called non-destructive testing (NDT) and the indirect indicators, such as soil properties and historical pipe breakage rates were reviewed as evaluation techniques. |
