| The aim of this study is to discuss critically the content of public debates in Turkey about history education and the kind of suggestions and tendencies these debates include about the attributes of history teaching. After scanning newspapers and websites, we reached the conclusion that the public debates continuing in Turkey focus on the social and national aims of history teaching, linked to a political agenda concerning international relationships. It is clear that history education in Turkey has two basic aims: to contribute to the construction of national consciousness and to cultivate peaceful attitudes.
