| 5. ConclusionThe study underlined that, in Central Anatolian Region, the preeminent reason for tree mortality was drought and it weakens trees against pathogens and diseases. Drought triggered mortalities have been observed every dry year in Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana plantations and natural stands in Ankara and Konya. Mortalities have been observed every dry year in Abies cilicica natural stands in south of Konya. Mortality of Pinus sylvestris resulted in vegetation shifts such that the Scotch pine-Oak-Juniper woodlands are becoming dominated by Oak and Juniper that they are typical of semi-arid Central Anatolian conditions. Drought-induced tree mortality in Pinus sylvestris natural stands in Yozgat (near the furthest southern distribution in the World) was considered as the sign of a reduction in its natural southern distribution.Climate models predict an increase in frequency and intensity of extreme drought events in Turkey. Extreme prolonged drought can result in widespread mortality of plants. It would be better for the Turkish Forest Service to have a good forest monitoring system to help in interpreting future tree mortality cases and decreases in tree growth and vitality. |
