| Introduction The list of potential problems associated with discards is quite extensive: threatening endangered species, wasting resources, increasing fishery costs, damaging habitat, impacting the food web and redirecting ecosystem pathways1. Usually termed by-catch, some of the captured organisms may be retained for sale or use, while others are discarded back into the sea because of either low value or regulatory requirement2. Most studies focus on the discards of commercial species and it is often unclear whether noncommercial species are recorded, eg there are few references to discards of jellyfish3. There has been little study of bycatch and discarding in midwater trawl fisheries in Europe. These fisheries are of recent origin, beginning in France in the early 1980's4. Target species in Turkish Black Sea coastal pairly midwater trawl fisheries is the anchovy and horse mackerel, whereby trawl fisheriesfor … |
