| DOI: 10.26650/ASE20180002The Yeşilırmak is one of the rivers in Turkey wheresturgeons migrate for spawning. It originates in the Kösedağ Mountains in Sivasand flows into the Black Sea at the plain of Çarşamba. The Yeşilırmak plays amajor role in agricultural production and irrigation, and it also suppliesenergy due to the hydroelectric power plant (HPP). Serious structural changesand significant habitat loss for sturgeons and other fish species have occurreddue to the dams and HPPs in the Yeşilırmak, especially since the 1970s. It isalso a known fact that fish passages in these constructions are not suitablefor the sturgeons to pass through. Unfortunately, coastal regulations along theriver have had a negative effect on the habitats. Although the Yeşilırmak haslost quite a lot of its natural structure and its waterway gradually shorteneddue to the HPPs, sturgeons can still migrate upstream into it. Therefore,related sectors and stakeholders should consider the importance of theYeşilırmak in their planned activities for the future of sturgeons in Turkishwaters. In this study, the major factors affecting the sturgeon migration inthe Yeşilırmak will be evaluated. |
