Özet
Girls who grow up in an environment that promotes traditional gender roles are more likely to drop out of school (Caner, Güven, Ökten, and Sakallı, 2016). The concept of gender stereotypes expresses these views, which are traditionally based on gender, regarding the general characteristics of the individual and the behaviors that are expected to be displayed (Heilman, 2001). Stereotypes are formed by generalizing some characteristics attributed to a particular group to all members of that group (Heilman, 2001). When generalizations about women and men are made, stereotypes based on gender are mentioned. Gender stereotypes emerge when, for instance, men are labeled as competent, responsible, ambitious, and analytical while women are labeled as emotional, self-conscious, and intuitive (Heilman, 2012).
