Özet
Ammonium (NH4+) is an undesired compound in wastewater, but when isolated it is a useful product. The recovery of ammonium from contaminated sources such as landfill leachates can be beneficial as it could be used as a liquid fertilizer in the agriculture and as a reactant in many other fields. The present study investigated the recovery of NH4+ from synthetic ammonium solution by direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). The recovery was performed using hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and Polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membranes with 0.45 µm as pore size. With a feed NH4+ concentration around 2000 mg/L, the highest recovery efficiencies were performed at the highest heating feed solution (60 oC) for both membranes, approximately 80%. The transmembrane flux up to 14 L/m². h was achieved. It was also discovered that the feed temperature and pH were the most important factors affecting the recovery performance. During the recovery of NH4+ from real wastewater, the effluent can be used as liquid fertilizer, but a further investigation to assess its suitability and the entire absence of any harmful compound to the plants may be required.
